Summary:
 

The Safety Engineer applies engineering principles,  practices, and processes to ensure the safety of combat systems and combat related systems.  As such the Safety Engineer must identify, evaluate, characterize, and mitigate safety risks, develop safety policies, and support system certification for deployment. This will include evaluations necessary to prevent fratricide, and evaluations to ensure weapons, sensors, and their components are safe for combat system personnel while remaining effective in their missions.  This Safety Engineer role will integrate advanced mathematical techniques, professional engineering principles, physical sciences, ergonomics, psychology, and physiology to design to implement safety solutions. The Safety Engineer will support all aspects of system development to include system design, system operations, system testing, verification, and certification.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Advise on system safety requirements using historical data, failure mode analyses, and software/hardware evaluations.
  • Evaluation of systems and their network interfaces to identify and characterize safety risks
  • Develop and recommend taxonomy, processes, tools, and quality evidence requirements for incorporation into customer driven policies and guidance
  • Apply systems engineering acumen to enhance the safety of systems throughout their lifecycle, from development to certification and maintenance.
  • Support the certification of software and hardware to meet the requirements of DoD safety organizations and gain risk acceptance for deployment
  • Contribute to initiatives aimed at identifying and mitigating safety risks that could lead to fratricide 
  • Develop safe methods for storage and transmission for hazardous liquids and gases.
  • Review engineering plans and implement system or facility modifications to improve lifecycle safety.
  • Conduct field studies to identify hazards and validate adequacy of hazard controls.
  • Design test protocols and evaluate results to ensure system safety.
  • Review safety policies, standards, and guidelines; recommend technical improvements consistent with engineering principles.
 

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics) and 5 years of relevant experience, or
    • Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience in safety engineering, risk analysis, or related fields.
    • Knowledge of hazard identification, analysis, and control.
    • Familiarity with ergonomics, human factors, and human error mitigation in engineering systems.

Compensation Statement (Maryland Pay Transparency Notice)

In accordance with Maryland’s pay transparency requirements, the anticipated annual salary for this position is between $110,000 and $145,000. This range represents a reasonable estimate based on the expected scope of work and varying levels of experience.

Final compensation will depend on several factors, such as job responsibilities, relevant experience, education, certifications, specific skills, internal alignment, and prevailing market rates. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
